Police arrested 3 people Tuesday afternoon in connection with a Saturday shooting at Eastland Mall that killed an 18-year-old man, Harper Woods public safety director Jim Burke said Wednesday.

They were taken into custody in different locations in Detroit, police said. Harper Woods police were assisted by officers from the Detroit Police Department. Burke said he anticipates the department presenting charges against the suspects to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office by the end of the week. So as to not disturb progress in an ongoing, “very complex” investigation, Burke declined to share information about the arrested suspects, including their gender.

“Several other people of interest” are still being investigated, Burke said.

Police who responded at the time of the shooting arrested someone identified by mall patrons as being involved in the killing. But that person was released after being interviewed by detectives working in the case and is not believed to be involved in the incident, Burke said.

Tyrell Lane died of multiple gunshot wounds after he was shot around 5:50 p.m. Saturday as he walked out of Burlington Coat Factory at the mall, police said.
