Melvindale police are seeking a 23-year-old man suspected of shooting and killing another man at a child’s party on Saturday, Lt. John Allen of the Melvindale Police Department said Monday.

Police are looking for Lamar Alexander Carter, 23, as a suspect in the shooting of Sean Lawrence Key, 44, and police are seeking a warrant for his arrest from the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.

The shooting took place just before 7 p.m. Saturday at the Play Atlantis Family Fun Center, 19400 Allen Road.

Two separate groups were hosting children’s parties in a back room of the play center when a fight broke out involving at least one woman in each party. Men stepped in to break up the fight and might have gotten involved in the scrap as well, Allen said.

At some point, Carter left the play center and returned with a gun, shooting Key in the head, Allen said. The Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office and the Melvindale Police Department confirmed the victim’s identity.

Saturday’s homicide was the first in Melvindale in 2016, Allen said.
