One person died and another was injured Monday night after they were hit while trying to push a vehicle across eastbound Interstate 94 at Telegraph in Wayne County, State Police said.

A preliminary investigation found that after a 2001 Chrysler van broke down on the left shoulder of the highway, its driver and passenger tried to push the vehicle to the right shoulder, MSP said. The driver of an eastbound 2003 Pontiac then T-boned its side about 8:20 p.m., pushing the van about a quarter-mile up the freeway. Meanwhile, a 2006 Dodge pickup also driving east on the interstate struck the van’s driver, who was in the travel lanes, state police said in a statement.

The driver died instantly, First Lt. Michael Shaw said.

The passenger also was struck and transported to a hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening, Shaw said.

The drivers in the other two vehicles were not hurt, he said. Other details were not released.

MSP is continuing to investigate the incident.
