One dead, one arrested after Inkster shooting
Inkster — One man is dead Thursday after police said he was fatally shot in his vehicle near the border of Inkster and Garden City and slammed into a house.
A suspect is in custody.
The incident happened around 3:55 p.m. near Cherry Hill and Bert Lane, according to Michigan State Police.
Two men got into an altercation and one allegedly fired several rounds into the victim’s vehicle, said Lt. Mike Shaw. The victim drove about 500 feet from the scene and hit the side of a house, he said.
The house was occupied, but no one inside was injured, Shaw said.
The victim was taken a hospital and pronounced dead on arrival.
MSP troopers and Inkster police responded to the scene and recovered a handgun. Police arrested the suspect, who was speaking with detectives Thursday evening, Shaw said.
Sabrina Listopad and her boyfriend, Brandon Barnes, both of Garden City were in their home down the street from the crash when they heard multiple gunshots. They rushed outside to the corner of Brandt and Cherry Hill and saw billowing smoke. Farther away, they saw the damaged two-story house.
Within minutes, Listopad said she spotted an armed man running toward the Inkster side of the border with Garden City.
“It’s nerve racking,” she said standing near the intersection. “I’m not going to be able to sleep. I’ve lived here 10-11 years and I’ve never seen something like that.”
Police remained at the scene at 8 p.m., blocking traffic on a large stretch of Cherry Hill near Middle Belt.
Shaw did not provide further information on the suspect or victim. He also declined to say what may have sparked the altercation.
