A 2-year-old boy who was found unconscious in a hot tub on Monday night in Inkster has died, a spokesman for the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Tuesday.

The boy’s mother was in police custody as of Tuesday morning, said Lt. Jeffrey Twardzik of the Inkster Police Department.

An autopsy was conducted Tuesday, but results were pending, said Lloyd Jackson, a spokesman for the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office. His name had not been released.

The toddler was found face down in inches of “scalding hot water” in an upstairs whirlpool bathtub at the house on the 26000 block of Avondale, Twardzik said. This was about 7 p.m.

After performing CPR, emergency personnel rushed the toddler to a hospital, where he was initially listed in critical condition. But he succumbed to his injuries overnight.

The 2-year-old, along with his 7-year-old brother, 8-year-old sister, and 15-year-old brother, were returned to the home within the last year from Child Protective Services, Twardzik said.

Mark Patterson, who identified himself as a neighbor,  told WXYZ (Ch. 7) that the mother tried to save her son’s life.

“She was frantic and she was hurt as anybody would be. It was a tragic accident,” he said. “She was a single mother and she was doing the best she could. … This is just a tragic situation.”
