State stops brine found seeping from Southfield well
Southfield — The state says it has stopped brine that was found seeping from an old, abandoned well in Southfield.
The state Department of Environmental Quality says Tuesday there was no evidence of petroleum release and the well has been plugged.
State workers were conducting an evaluation last month for an exploratory oil and gas well permit on the grounds of a Southfield church when they found the brine, which is essentially salt water.
The old well was drilled in 1939. It is about 11/2 miles from the proposed well at the Word of Faith International Christian Center.
Officials have said the brine is not related to the application for a permit to drill at Word of Faith and would have no bearing on the permit decision for the church.
