A Detroit woman has been charged with murder after she allegedly stabbed her live-in domestic partner during a fight in their apartment on the city’s east side, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.

Needra Anderson, 40, allegedly attacked April Smith, 23, sometime after 7 p.m. Wednesday on the 14400 block of Corbett, near Chalmers and Interstate 94, said Maria Miller, spokeswoman for the prosecutor’s office.

“During the argument Anderson retrieved a butcher knife and stabbed Ms. Smith multiple times,” Miller said in a statement. “Police were dispatched to the scene at 7:45 p.m. and observed the victim on a bedroom floor suffering from stab wounds.”

Neighbors who overheard the fight summoned police, said Officer Jennifer Moreno of the Detroit Police Department. When officials arrived, they found Anderson still at the scene and immediately took her into custody.

“Per witnesses, she was hysterical outside, in front of the home,” Moreno said.

Smith was rushed to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead at 8:18 p.m.

Anderson is charged with first-degree, premeditated murder, Miller said. She will be arraigned 10:30 a.m. Friday.
