A 37-year-old man was struck and killed by an Amtrak train in Westland on Sunday.

The incident happened at 4:20 p.m. when train No. 350 traveling from Chicago to Pontiac hit the man on the tracks on Merriman Road, south of Michigan Avenue, authorities say.

The victim, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Amtrak spokesman Craig Schultz said it is unclear why the victim was on the train tracks.

The train was carrying 104 passengers, he said. None were injured.

Passengers were directed off the train and onto a bus, which took them to Pontiac after a 40 minute delay, Schultz said.

The Westland Police Department is investigating the accident.
