Two women are dead and another injured after their vehicle was rear-ended Tuesday on the shoulder of Interstate 75 near Springwells in Detroit.

The crash closed the northbound lanes of the freeway for four hours, according to the Michigan State Police.

Witnesses reported that around 3:35 p.m. a four-door Chevrolet was stopped on the left shoulder of the freeway when a pickup driving erratically struck the vehicle, said Lt. Mike Shaw of the Michigan State Police.

The driver and back seat passenger of the Chevy were killed and the front seat passenger was taken to a hospital in serious condition. None were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, Shaw said. Their names have not been released pending police notification of next of kin.

The male driver of the pickup received minor injuries, Shaw said. He is undergoing a medical evaluation.

“We’re currently looking to see if this was a medical condition the driver of the pickup truck was suffering,” Shaw said.

Shaw said he did not know why the Chevy was stopped.

The freeway reopened shortly after 7:30 p.m.
