Michigan State Police are investigating what it calls the “suspicious” deaths of a 30-year-old mother and her 2-month-old girl in Inkster on Wednesday night.

The woman was found by her husband on the landing at the top of the stairs leading to the second floor of the home, sitting in a slumped position with the baby on her lap. This was about 7:30 p.m. on the 3800 block of Robinson.

Initial information from state police said the child was a boy, but a spokesman from the Wayne County Medical Examiner confirmed that the child is a girl.

Police say they believe the baby was suffocated when the woman slumped forward, and interviews with family members revealed the woman had been suffering from medical issues over the last two months.

The autopsy has been complete and results from the medical examiner are pending.

State police investigate all fatal incidents and nonfatal shootings in Inkster through the Secure Cities Partnership, and have since 2011.
