Wayne County officials will host hearings starting this week to arrange payment plans for homeowners facing foreclosure because of property tax debt.

The meetings are called “show cause hearings” and are a chance for delinquent property owners to talk with county officials about their options.

“This is our biggest opportunity to see so many people at one time,” said Wayne County Treasurer Eric Sabree. “We want to stress that they need to get into a payment agreement.”

As of last week, about 34,880 properties are at risk for foreclosure countywide, officials said. That’s down about 30 percent from last year, Sabree said.

Treasury officials typically ask judges to enter judgment of foreclosure in late March, but the county typically works with homeowners to save their properties until June.

The hearings are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and the same times Jan. 17-19 and Jan. 24 and 25. All are in the eighth floor of 400 Monroe in downtown Detroit.
