Detroit Prom dress giveaway to mark 10th anniversary
A Wayne County official has helped girls dress to the nines for their high school proms for 10 years.
County Commissioner Alisha Bell, D-Detroit, will host her annual Belle of the Ball event on April 8. The event, which gives free prom dresses to girls in need, will mark its 10th year.
Bell’s prom dress giveaway will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Club at 16500 Tireman. Dresses will be handed out on a first-come, first-served basis.
“This will truly be a special event,” Bell, the commission’s vice-chairwoman, said in a statement. “To do this now for 10 years and see all the smiling faces, it gets a little emotional for all of us.”
Bell has also begun a drive to collect prom dresses and accessories for the event. Donations will be accepted through April 1 at either the Boys and Girls Club or the Guardian Building, 500 Griswold, in downtown Detroit.
Last year, nearly 75 girls received free prom dresses at the event.
“Every girl dreams of attending her prom and for our team to help make that happen, it’s a feeling we enjoy sharing every year,” Bell said.
