2 who brought guns to Dearborn police station arraigned

Two men were arraigned Friday on multiple charges after allegedly walking into the Dearborn Police Department armed with firearms and wearing tactical vests.

Brandon Vreeland, 40, of Jackson and James Craig Baker, 24, of Leonard were arrested Feb. 5 after recording themselves entering the police station with guns visible and their faces hidden by masks.

Vreeland was charged with carrying a concealed weapon, resisting arrest and disturbing the peace, according to Dearborn police. Baker faces charges of carrying a concealed weapon, brandishing a weapon, resisting arrest and disturbing the peace.

"The ultimate objective is public safety for everyone, including police officers," Chief Ronald Haddad said in a statement.

The charges stem from the Feb. 5 incident at the police station, which began with a suspicious persons report nearby.

Dearborn police first were called to a shopping district near Ford and Southfield to investigate a report of “two suspicious men in a vehicle wearing tactical vests and masks,” officials said in a statement at the time. Vreeland and Baker left the area before officers arrived, but a police sergeant later spotted their vehicle in a park around three miles away. He conducted a brief traffic stop and did not see any visible weapons.

After being released, the men went to the police station to “make a complaint,” according to the video posted online.

The ensuing demonstration led to a brief but tense standoff.

“Put it on the ground or you are dead,” one officer yelled during the chaotic scene. “I will shoot you.”

At arraignment Friday, Vreeland's bond was set at $20,000 cash or surety while Baker received a $50,000 cash or surety bond. The men are due back in court March 10 and March 17, police said. They must wear GPS tethers if released on bond.
