Police say Monroe man lived with dead girlfriend
A Monroe man was arrested after police found him living with his girlfriend who had been dead for nearly a month.
On Dec. 31, Monroe police was asked by the landlord of the apartment building to "check the well-being" of a woman she hadn't seen in a while.
"The man had been telling the landlord excuses of why the girlfriend couldn't talk and soon got suspicious," said Lt. John Wall. "She allowed us to check the residence and upon entry, we knew something wasn't right."
David Hall, 49, confessed to living with the dead woman at the apartment they shared, police said.
Police estimated the girlfriend, Kandace Simmons, had been dead for about four weeks, based on how deterioration of the body. The Wayne County Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy. Wall said he doesn't believe there was foul play involved.
Hall was arrested on Jan. 2 for outstanding warrants. Wall said Hall was wanted for domestic violence charges involving his girlfriend. Bond was set at $50,000.
"We are just waiting to get the autopsy back, and there are a lot of unanswered questions. Why would this guy not call and remain living with her?" said Wall.
The Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Hall has been charged with concealing the death of an individual and is expected to be in First District Court in Monroe on Jan. 18 and Jan. 23 for a preliminary examination.
