A threat has prompted Romulus High School to ban backpacks there on Friday and step up safety measures, district officials said.

The threat is “non-credible” and being investigated by police, Romulus Community Schools representatives wrote on the district Facebook page. Other details were not released.

“Backpacks of any kind will not be allowed at the High School on Friday, March 16, 2018,” the district post read. “This is proper protocol to ensure the safety of our staff and students. All individuals will be required to go through metal detection prior to entering the building.”

The incident is the latest to spark action at Metro Detroit schools in the wake of the Feb. 14 school shooting in Parkland, Florida, that left 17 people dead.

Belleville High School was closed Tuesday after a phoned-in threat to police, the Van Buren Public Schools district announced.

A threat prompted authorities to arrest four people and Whitmore Lake Public Schools officials to cancel classes in the district Wednesday.

There have also been lockdowns, evacuations and charges issued for several teens across Metro Detroit.
