Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy on Friday charged an Ecorse mother for allegedly leaving her infant child unattended in her car outside the Southgate Sam's Club.

Jamie Lyn Stefanko, 35, has been charged with Child Abuse - Fourth Degree and Child Abuse-Leaving a Child Unattended in a Vehicle, both misdemeanors. She is expected to be arraigned on Monday at 9 a.m. in the 28th District Court.

Officers received a call reporting a baby was left in a car at about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to police.

Police Chief Brett Selby said the caller provided police with the vehicle's location, the parking lot of a Sam's Club store on Northline Road near Interstate 75.

Witnesses told officers the baby had been in the car for some time, Selby said. At the time, temperatures were about 30 degrees.

He said the child's mother was located in the store as officers unlocked the car and evaluated the baby's condition with the help of Southgate firefighters and emergency medical technicians.

Selby said the baby was later evaluated by doctors and found to be in good health.
