Man charged in Canton package thefts

A Van Buren Township man has been charged in the thefts of packages from residential porches in Canton Township, police said Monday.

James Michael Newman, 27, has been charged with a count of larceny of more than $1,000 and less than $20,000 and a count of receiving and concealing stolen property, according to police. Both crimes are felonies punishable by up to five years in prison.

A 35th District Court judge set Newman's bond at $10,000 and scheduled his next court appearance for April 37.

Police said Newman is accused of stealing numerous packages from porches.

Detectives investigating the thefts were able to identify the suspect from private home surveillance footage.
