A 15-year-old boy died Wednesday afternoon after being hit by a train as he laid on the tracks in Belleville, police said.

The incident was reported about 2:15 p.m. near South Street in the Wayne County community, said Belleville Police Chief Hal Berriman.

An eastbound Canadian Pacific train traveling on Norfolk Southern rails "made contact with a person on the tracks" near Davis, a company representative said.

Berriman said the boy "made no attempt" to move from the tracks despite the oncoming train. The train was not carrying passengers, authorities said. Police are treating the crash as an accident, Berriman said.

Police declined to identify the student, other than saying he was a student at Belleville High School.

Other details about the incident were not released. The accident is under investigation.

Van Buren Public Schools did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
