Allen Park moves forward plan for Chick-fil-A

The Detroit News

The city of Allen Park has begun to pave the way for a Chick-fil-A in either 2019 or 2020 with the Thursday approval of site plans by the city’s planning commission.

The move still requires approval from the city’s zoning board of appeals with the approved site on Fairlane Drive in front of the Meijer store west of Interstate 94 and north of West Outer Drive.

Chick-fil-A opened its first store in Detroit last year in the main lobby of Harper/Hutzel Women’s Hospital. Another location opened at Somerset Collection in Troy. The company opened a store inside Detroit Metropolitan Airport in 2015. Overall, there are 13 Chick-fil-A restaurants in Michigan and more than 2,200 nationwide.

Founded in 1964, the business has earned renown for customer service and employee perks such as Sundays off. But it also has been criticized for supporting an organization that opposes same-sex marriage.

The chain, which pressure cooks its chicken in 100-percent refined peanut oil, plans to only serve chicken raised without antibiotics by 2019.
