Man charged with driving drunk, leaving scene of fatal Redford crash
A 21-year-old man, Dejuan Michael Walton, faces two charges over a Memorial Day car crash in Redford Township that left a motorcyclist dead.
Walton is accused of driving drunk at the time of the fatal crash and fleeing the scene as well.
The fatal crash took place early Monday morning, about 1 a.m., at Telegraph and Joy roads, said Officer Nick Dudek of the Redford Township Police Department.
A motorcyclist was heading southbound on Telegraph, through a green light, when a Ford Expedition headed westbound on Joy Road, allegedly through a red light, and struck the motorcycle.
The motorcyclist was killed instantly. Dudek declined to give the driver's identity.
After the crash, the driver of the Expedition allegedly backed up and took off, hitting a motorist who was stopped at eastbound Joy Road, waiting to turn right onto southbound Telegraph. That driver, Dudek said, was not hurt.
While Dudek declined to discuss the identity of the driver of the Expedition, as he has not yet been arraigned, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office has filed charges. Court records identify the suspect as Walton. He is expected to be arraigned later Wednesday at Redford's 17th District Court.
Walton faces two charges: operating under the influence causing death, and failure to stop at the scene of an accident, when at fault, resulting in death.
