Man charged with setting fire to occupied Canton home

A 55-year-old man was charged Wednesday with setting fire to a mobile home in Canton, which was occupied by six people — three of them children. 

Stephen Richard Zawodna was arraigned in 35th District Court in Plymouth on more than 20 charges issued by the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office. He was denied bond.

Zawodna was charged with six counts of homicide/attempted murder, assault with intent to murder, assault with intent to do great bodily hard, one count of second degree arson, one count of aggravated domestic violence and habitual offender third offense.

The incident occurred at 5:30 a.m. Friday when Canton dispatch received a 911 call of a mobile home on fire in the 1100 block of Old Michigan Avenue. 

A smoke detector had alerted the occupants of the fire and all six were able to exit the home unharmed. Police and fire crews arrived on scene to extinguish the fire and began their investigation. At 10 a.m. Friday, detectives arrested Zawodna. 

Zawodna is scheduled to return to 35th District Court on June 8.
