Sumpter Township police said they have arrested a 44-year-old Allen Park man for shooting at them and leading officers on a car chase Monday night.

Police are not releasing his name until he is formally charged.

Officers with the department responded to a call about a suspected drunk driver in the area of Sumpter and Willow roads at about 9:45 p.m. Monday, police said.

The officers attempted to execute a traffic stop of the suspect but he refused to slow down and fled south, according to authorities.

Police pursued the vehicle and continued attempts to pull him over as he drove onto westbound Oakville Waltz Road and eventually into Washtenaw County.

Officials said the driver then fired at least five shots at the officers.

The driver then traveled to the Milan city limits before doubling back towards the police cars. The suspect's vehicle then crashed into one of the police scout cars, ending the chase, officials said.

Police arrested the driver. They also searched the car and recovered five firearms and several thousand rounds of ammunition, authorities said.

The officers sustained minor injuries in the incident.
