Allen Park man charged in gunfire at police
A 44-year-old Allen Park man was charged Thursday with shooting at Sumpter Township police and committing other offenses during an incident this week, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office said.
Christopher Willoughby is charged with firing a handgun at police around 8:40 p.m. Monday in the area of Sumpter Road near Willow Road in Belleville after officers were called to the area for a suspected drunken driver.
When a Sumpter Township officer tried to stop Willoughby, he fled south for about three miles. After another officer joined the pursuit, Willoughby allegedly pulled out a handgun and fired about five times at the officers, according to the prosecutor's officers.
Police pursued Willoughby's vehicle and continued to try to pull him over as he traveled onto westbound Oakville Waltz Road and eventually into Washtenaw County.
Willoughby alleged drove to Milan city limits before he doubled back towards the officer's car. His vehicle crashed into a police scout car and he was arrested.
Police searched the car and recovered five firearms and several thousand rounds of ammunition, according to authorities.
The officers sustained minor injuries during the incident.
Willoughby has been charged with 13 criminal counts, including assault with intent to murder, assault with intent to do great bodily harm and weapons violations.
He was arraigned Thursday in 34th District Court. His probable cause conference is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. June 27 before Judge Lisa Martin, with a preliminary examination at 9:05 a.m. July 5 before Judge Brian Oakley, also in 34th District Court. Bond was set at $1 million cash/surety.
