A Melvindale grocery store is a "total loss" after firefighters spent more than 12 hours battling the blaze overnight into Thursday morning.

Melvindale Fire Department got a call about 9 p.m. regarding a fire at a grocery store inside a strip mall in the area of Oakwood Boulevard and Allen Road, said Melvindale Fire Chief Joe Murray.

Murray said the grocery store was "fully engulfed" by the time firefighters arrived, which turned it into a "mostly defensive" operation, trying to keep the damage contained.

Some 30 firefighters were at the scene at its peak. One suffered heat exhaustion and was treated at an area hospital but is OK. Thursday morning there are still about 10 firefighters at the scene, working to extinguish hot spots.

The store itself, Murray said, is a "total loss." It's "still too early" to tell what caused the fire, Murray said.
