Three families have been displaced and one man injured by a fire that broke out early Friday morning in a Wayne duplex, officials said.

Wayne Fire Chief Mike Stradtner said firefighters responded about 5 a.m. to the fire at a duplex on Gladwin Court near Venoy and and Glennwood roads.

He said it appears the fire started in one two-floor structure, then spread to an adjacent garage and another duplex next to the garage.

"People were running from the structures when we arrived," Stradtner said. "One person from one of the homes transported himself to the hospital with some burns. Other than that, no one else was hurt."

Stradtner said the man left the scene before firefighters arrived. He said he did not have any information on the burned victim's injuries, but was told the man was transferred to the University of Michigan burn center.

He said investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.
