Mom charged with leaving son, 3, in car at Detroit casino
A 25-year-old Inkster mom was charged Monday with leaving her 3-year-son alone in a vehicle in the parking garage of a Detroit casino while she went inside to gamble.
Talayia Lara Renee Wellams left her young son unattended Friday while she was inside the Motor City Casino, authorities allege. The child was found around 7:20 a.m. by casino security alone in the vehicle parked on the third floor of the casino's parking garage.
According to the prosecutor's office, the child may have been left alone for five hours while his mom and her aunt were gambling.
Wellams has been charged with second-degree child abuse and leaving a child in a car unattended. Wellems was arraigned Saturday in Romulus District Court. Her probable cause conference has been scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Friday.
A preliminary examination in the case has been set for 9 a.m. Aug. 17. Both hearings are before 36th District Court Judge William McConico.
Wellams received a $50,000/10 percent bond.
