Novi man who allegedly shot at police is charged
A Novi man who allegedly shot at officers who were pursuing him was arraigned Thursday in connection with the incident.
Olajuwon Israel, 24, is accused of discharging a weapon while running from police around 10:30 p.m. Aug. 20 in the 20300 block of Asbury Park.
Israel and a group of other men were standing in the street drinking from plastic cups when they were asked by police if they had weapons. All of the men raised their shirts to show police officers they had no weapons except for Israel, who stepped away from the group and took off running, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office.
Two officers pursued Israel and allegedly commanded him to stop.
Israel jumped over a fence and fired his weapon, according to the prosecutor's office. The officers returned fire, striking Israel, who continued to run after he was shot, authorities allege.
He was arrested in a yard in the 20300 block of Murray Hill.
Israel was taken to hospital, where he is being treated for his wound. He was charged with felon in possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, seven counts of possession of a fraudulent transaction device, resisting and obstructing a police officer and felony firearm.
Israel was arraigned in the hospital and was given a $50,000 cash bond. A probable cause hearing is set for Aug. 30. A preliminary examination hearing will follow on Sept. 6.
