A 36-year-old man was killed trying to cross Interstate 94 early Saturday after his vehicle lost control and hit the median, Michigan State Police said.

Police said the incident occurred at 2:05 a.m. when they received calls about a car striking a guardrail at westbound I-94 near Middlebelt. Additional callers said a body was in the middle of the freeway.

Troopers closed the highway at Telegraph to investigate. Police determined the man was traveling eastbound on I-94 near Middlebelt when he lost control of the vehicle and crossed the median. He then struck a guardrail on the westbound side of I-94.

He then exited the vehicle and attempted to cross the westbound I-94 lanes and was struck by a vehicle. He was struck again by several vehicles and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

A 39-year-old man driving of the vehicle that initially struck the victim stopped and was interviewed by police.

Police said driving under the influence of marijuana may be a factor.
