Dearborn libraries' Food for Fines helps feed needy
Dearborn Public Library visitors can help city firefighters give to families in need and take care of overdue fines starting next week.
From Nov. 1-17, the library system is offering the Food for Fines program. For every canned or boxed item donated to Dearborn firefighters to distribute through the Burn Drive Food Cupboard, library patrons can receive a $1 reduction in overdue fines, library officials said.
Fines and fees for lost or damaged library items or library accounts in collection status are not eligible for the program.
All Dearborn Public Library locations will be accepting the goods, which must be non-perishable, not expired and larger than single-serving size. Acceptable food items include canned soup; instant potatoes; pancake mix; canned juice, vegetables, and fruit; rice; pasta; and macaroni and cheese.
