Redford Union High School was locked down Friday morning because a student brought a gun designed to fire plastic BBs to the building, Redford Township police said.

Police said the gun, which looks like a handgun that fires bullets, was confiscated by the school resource officer.

The officer received information from a student who said he saw another student remove a handgun from his backpack, according to officials.

School officials placed the school on lock down after they were able to confirm the presence of a gun by reviewing video footage, police said.

The school resource officer and school administrators immediately located the student with the gun, detained him and removed the weapon from his backpack, authorities said.

Police determined the weapon was an Airsoft gun and the lock down was over after about 10 minutes, they said.

Officials said the 15-year-old student has been suspended from school with further disciplinary action pending a review board.

Police also learned another student at the school, age 17, was involved in the incident. The older student has also been suspended with a review board pending.

Officials said they plan to submit criminal charges for both suspects to prosecutors.
