Highland Park — Police are searching for a suspect who hit an officer with a car early Monday morning, officials said.

The police officer was taken to a hospital. He was treated, released and returned to duty, said Marli Blackman, a city spokeswoman.

She said at about 12:46 a.m. Highland Park police officers were called to the area of Second Avenue and Manchester Parkway to respond to a report of drag racing.

Police found the racers near Woodward Avenue and the Davison Freeway, officials said.

The vehicles rolled towards the squad cars of police officers. An officer exited his vehicle to approach the suspects and one of the racers accelerated and crashed into a police car and the officer, Blackman said. Police then fired shots at the suspect vehicle to defend themselves.

Blackman said vehicle fled and no other injuries were reported.

Police continue to look for the vehicle — a white, 2011-2014 Chrysler 300 — and its driver.

Anyone with information about the vehicle or the suspect should call Highland Park Police at (313) 852-7338.
