Man fatally shot in standoff with police at motel
Benton Township — Authorities say a man has been fatally shot during a standoff with police in southwestern Michigan after abducting his ex-wife and taking her to a motel.
Police say the man took his ex-wife at gunpoint Wednesday morning from an assisted-living facility in St. Joseph where she worked and brought her to the American Inn in nearby Benton Township.
The Herald-Palladium of St. Joseph reports police say the man fired at officers during a standoff at the motel and police returned fire.
Police tell TV station WSBT that they initially entered the motel after hearing a gunshot. The woman had what were described as non-life-threatening injuries.
The assisted-living facility had been placed on lockdown after the man showed up with a gun. Names of those involved weren’t immediately released.
