Alto — A woman is sharing the story of how she was attacked by an injured buck in the Grand Rapids area.

Shawna Hoekstra spotted the deer in a field Tuesday morning in Alto. She tells WOOD-TV that she noticed the 10-point buck had been shot, so she decided to follow it and wait for it to die.

But as she closed in on the deer, Hoekstra realized she didn’t wait long enough because the deer was still alive. When the deer lunged at Hoekstra, she says she grabbed its antlers and threw it on the ground, but the animal thrashed until it had her pinned.

Hoekstra struggled with the deer for about 30 minutes until backup arrived.

A firefighter held down the buck while a sheriff’s deputy killed it.
