Authorities: Robbery suspect fatally shot himself

Grand Rapids — Authorities say a man wearing body armor fatally shot himself after pointing a gun at an officer following the robbery of a Grand Rapids credit union.

Grand Rapids police said the Kent County Medical Examiner ruled Friday that Frank Anthony Kelley died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head, not police gunfire. The 38-year-old died Monday morning.

Police say the autopsy reveals the gun Kelley used was recovered next to him. It’s consistent with the description of the weapon used during the holdup of the credit union in nearby Kentwood.

Police also say the weapon was fired more than once, indicating Kelley fired at police before shooting himself.

The incident remains under investigation.
