Algonac -- Authorities recovered the body of a 37-year-old Macomb County man who failed to surface after jumping into the St. Clair River for a swim.

St. Clair County Sheriff Tim Donnellon said Darren Cogbill’s body was located by sonar about 7 p.m. Tuesday. Dive team members pulled it from about 45 feet of water.

An autopsy will be performed.

Cogbill of Roseville was reported missing Monday evening from a boat near the Algonac Harbour Boat Club.

The captain was bringing the vessel back in at about 5:30 p.m. when four people on board leaped off the rear and into the water, said Lt. Joe Hernandez of the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office.

He was one of four people who jumped into the river’s North Channel about 35 miles northeast of Detroit.

The other three surfaced after jumping in. Witnesses told deputies that Cogbill surfaced once and then went under the water.
