An 18-year-old Chesterfield Township man died Monday when he disappeared after jumping into a lake in Hartland Township, officials said.

The man was on a boat in Handy Lake with friends and family shortly before 4 p.m. when he jumped into the water to cool off, said Fire Marshal Michael Bernardin with the Hartland Deerfield Fire Authority.

The fire authority, along with the Brighton Area Fire Authority, Livingston County Dive Rescue team, Livingston County Sheriff’s Department and the Michigan State Police responded to the emergency call. UM Survival Flight also assisted.

Responders located the man’s body about an hour later in murky water, Bernardin said. He was about 30-40 feet from where he was last seen. Responders were unable to revive him, Bernardin said.

The man’s name has not been released.

Bernardin issued a warning to others out on the water in the summer.

“It doesn’t matter how good of a swimmer or how experience of a swimmer, how old or young, a personal floatation device is always a must whenever you’re out on the water,” Bernardin said.

Alcohol or drugs were not factors in the incident, officials said.
