Monroe County sheriff officials say a husband tried to kill his wife before fatally shooting himself in Berlin Township early Saturday.

Authorities say the 55-year-old woman, who lived in the Newport Farms Manufactured Housing Community in the 2100 block of Joey Canyon Drive, was awaken by her husband who shot her in the neck around 4:59 a.m. The woman and her adult daughter then fled the home and called 911.

When deputies arrived and evacuated residents in the area, a special response team attempted to contact the husband but got no response. He was later found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The woman, whose name has not been released by authorities, was treated at Beaumont Hospital in Trenton for non-life threatening injuries.
