Michigan woman expands balloon business
Marysville — A previously home-run business that made balloon arrangements to liven up events now has a storefront in Marysville.
Owner Francine Townsend said she’s been in business for 15 years with Mad About Balloons before she outgrew her home in Roseville and decided to head a little north to spread the word about her work.
She said things started slow last October, but after more recently getting her business sign installed, she held an open house Jan. 31.
“We’re a balloon decorating company. The majority of our business is us going to a venue and setting a hall up for your party,” Townsend told the Times Herald. “If you’re doing setting pieces or you want something highlighted, we go and make that happen. Now having a store, it gives people the opportunity to come up and pick up arrangements.”
Townsend said that she hadn’t a lot of walk-in business yet and was hoping to start building it up as the warmer months approach.
She said starting in April, Mad About Balloons does a lot of graduation events, including both high schools and lower grades.
“We can do any type of event,” Townsend said. “Also corporate, businesses, set up (for) parties.”
She also said they “deliver anywhere.” Last week, that meant Toledo, Ohio.
For this month, the business’ Facebook page showed candy cups with a small balloon bouquet for Valentine’s Day. There was also a variety of balloon archways and holiday-themed decorations.
Townsend said her favorite was a 54-foot arch for the Faster Horses Country Festival in Brooklyn, Michigan.
Townsend said she picked up the “Mad About Balloons” business name from another that closed in Roseville.
Before that, she said she’d started small. She said a friend was a clown and balloon twister and convinced her to get involved.
“But I love balloons and I love décor. To be able to go into a room and transform (it) is a fabulous feeling,” Townsend said.
