Fall doesn't officially start for more than two weeks, but the weekend will certainly have autumn vibes.

But anyone tempted to break out a hoodie and hit up a bonfire may want to hold off until Saturday night.

Friday will be mostly cloudy with highs in the upper 70s and overnight lows in the upper 50s in Metro Detroit, according to the National Weather Service. There's a chance of light showers in the afternoon, with scattered showers possible early in the day for Saginaw and Flint.

Outside Metro Detroit, Friday will be warm during the day and chilly at night:

  • Grand Rapids: High of 74, low of 54
  • Mount Pleasant: High of 71, low of 51
  • Kalamazoo: High of 74, low of 55
  • Flint: High of 72, low of 56
  • Traverse City: High of 67, low of 53
  • Petoskey: High of 63, low of 51
  • Marquette: High of 63, low of 51

Saturday and Sunday will bring dry conditions with highs in the mid- to low 70s, the weather service said.

Fans attending football games Saturday at Michigan State University and the University of Michigan can expect partly cloudy and dry conditions, with a high of 75 in Ann Arbor and high of 74 in East Lansing.

North of M-59, especially in the Thumb, residents can expect slightly lower temperatures, in the high 60s both days.

Kyle Klein, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service's White Lake Township office, said there are sure signs summer is slowly ceding to fall.

"Midweek next week, the highs could be getting into the mid-80s, then it dips back down," Klein said. "Over the next couple weeks we could have a hot spell because we do have some hot days in September ... but generally we're trending toward fall weather now."

Rainfall in the region has been "pretty on average" for the month, with 0.75 inches of precipitation recorded as of Sept. 5, Klein said.
