Police: Montana man kills wife, 3 children then self

Butte, Mont. — Officials in southwestern Montana are investigating after a man shot and killed his wife and three children, set the family’s cabin on fire and then killed himself.

Anaconda-Deer Lodge Police Chief Tim Barkell tells The Montana Standard the shootings happened Sunday morning at a cabin about 15 miles southeast of Deer Lodge.

Barkell withheld the names of those involved until other relatives could be notified.

Coroner Jerry Thomas told The Associated Press on Monday that the children were ages 5, 4 and 1. The mother was 37, and the father was 59.

Barkell says the shooter called a friend around 10 a.m. Sunday to say he was going to kill his family and himself. The friend called 911.

Officers arriving at the cabin had to wait for firefighters because of the smoke and heat inside.
