Woman to be featured on $10 bills to be announced soon
U.S. Treasury Secretary Jacob J. Lew said he will announce “in the very near future” which woman will be featured on redesigned $10 bills.
While Lew said he received more than a million suggestions in various forms including Tweets, he didn’t mention any names of candidates. Alexander Hamilton, the nation’s first Treasury secretary, will remain on the new notes, he said.
“It’s time for a woman to be on our paper currency,” Lew said at a breakfast event sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor.
Lew was criticized by academics and others including former Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke for planning to put a woman on $10 bill and possibly demoting Hamilton, rather than evicting Andrew Jackson from the more widely circulated $20 notes.
