1 person killed, police officer wounded in Alabama gunfight
Cullman, Ala. — Authorities say a gunfight involving police officers in northern Alabama left one person dead and an officer wounded.
Multiple media outlets report that Cullman County Coroner Jeremy Kirkpatrick said Monday that 36-year-old Christopher Ray Tompkins was killed by multiple gunshots.
Cullman County Sheriff Matt Gentry said the shooting happened Sunday near the Cullman-Marshall county line following a police chase involving several law enforcement agencies.
Jeff Warren, an officer in the city of Arab, was shot in the left leg. Police Chief Ed Ralston told WHNT-TV (http://bit.ly/1NuJsdE ) the officer was stable after undergoing surgery, and his wound was not considered life-threatening.
Both Tompkins and the wounded officer are white.
It was unclear what started the chase. Al.com reports (http://bit.ly/1Jgzvg0 ) court records show Tompkins had a lengthy criminal record including convictions for theft, burglary and assault.
