Cops: Officer accidentally hits man while shooting dog

Phoenix — Phoenix police say an officer accidentally wounded a man while shooting a dog after it attacked the man and the officer.

Sgt. Jonathan Howard said the incident occurred Thursday morning outside a convenience store after a person entered store and told the officer that the dog was attacking people outside.

Howard said officer went outside, saw the dog attack a 53-year-old man, tried to pull it off and was bit in the arm.

Howard said the officer shot the dog, accidentally wounding the man in the foot. Both he and the officer were taken to hospitals for treatment.

Animal Care and Control spokeswoman Melissa Gable said the dog was euthanized because of its injuries. She said the medium-size mix had a red collar but no identification tags or microchip.
