Royalton, N.Y. — Authorities say a 53-year-old western New York man cleaning debris from an accident that killed his dog was fatally struck by a vehicle.

Niagara County Sheriff’s deputies say the dog had been hit by a car in the town of Royalton, north of Buffalo, just before dawn Monday. Deputies say the man moved the animal from the roadway and was trying to clear debris from the accident when he was hit by another car.

The man was flown to Erie County Medical Center, where he later died.

The sheriff’s office is investigating and hasn’t released the man’s name.
