New York — Authorities say a fired police officer suspected of fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend in the driveway of her New Jersey home jumped in front of a New York City subway.

Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli says 44-year-old Arthur Lomando sustained severe injuries to his head and legs after he threw himself in front of the train in Manhattan on Thursday night. Lomando was taken to Harlem Hospital. His condition is not known.

Earlier in the day, the prosecutor says Lomando attacked and killed his ex-girlfriend with a machete-like knife. Forty-eight-year-old Suzanne Bardzell had just pulled into the driveway of her Midland Park home and died at the scene.

Molinelli says Bardzell had a protection order against Lomando after repeated earlier incidents of domestic violence. Lomando was fired by the New York Police Department in 2004.
