Salt Lake City — A Utah man who pleaded guilty to trying to kidnap a young girl from her bedroom will serve at least six years and up to life in prison in the attempt thwarted by the child’s father.

A tearful Troy Morley said during a sentencing hearing on Monday that he was high on methamphetamine when he sneaked into the house and took the 5-year-old child from her home in suburban Salt Lake City.

Authorities say the girl’s father stopped the 49-year-old Morley as he tried to leave with her during the early morning hours last fall. Police say he calmly asked for the girl back and Morley handed her over.

The girl’s parents say she was afraid of her own bedroom after the incident that she still calls “the scary thing.”
