Toledo, Ohio — Toledo Zoo attendance reached one million visitors thanks to a Michigan family.

The zoo says Scott Hayes, of Ypsilanti, Michigan, and his two children were greeted at the admission gate on Monday and presented with a gift package honoring the millionth visitor.

Hayes and his children were visiting the zoo because his daughter had the day off from school. The zoo says Hayes said his family loves to come to the zoo and they especially enjoy the aquarium.

The prize package to the Hayes family included a Toledo Zoo membership and a $200 gift card, among other items.

Zoo officials say the facility draws tens of thousands of out-of-town visitors and those from Michigan make up about 30 percent of the annual attendance.
