Man shot to death by police officers in South Carolina
Cayce, S.C. — Police in South Carolina shot and killed a man early Tuesday after he fired at them while they were trying to arrest him on drug-related charges, a city spokeswoman said.
One officer was shot and wounded and the other was injured in the struggle, which happened around 1:30 a.m., said Ashley Hunter, a spokeswoman for the city of Cayce, just southwest of Columbia.
Both officers were taken to a local hospital and were expected to fully recover, Hunter said.
An autopsy determined Demetrius Shelley Bryant, 21, died from two bullet wounds to the upper body, Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher said.
Hunter said both officers are white men. State Law Enforcement Division spokesman Thom Berry said the dead suspect was black. The names of the officers involved have not been released.
The shooting comes after other police shootings have focused increased national attention on how police treat African-Americans.
SLED is investigating the shooting, the 45th time this year that officers have fired their weapons at a suspect in South Carolina. The highest number in any of the past 15 years of records kept by SLED is 46 in 2012.
There were 42 shootings involving police in South Carolina last year.
