Downey, Calif. — Los Angeles County authorities say the fatal shooting of a police officer near his department’s headquarters occurred during a botched robbery.

Sheriff’s Lt. John Corina said Thursday that investigators arrested two men in their 20s and a juvenile in the death of 29-year-old Downey police Officer Ricardo “Ricky” Galvez.

Corina says Galvez was in plainclothes in his personal car in a public parking lot next to police headquarters when he was shot. The five-year veteran died in his car.

Corina says the three young men were out looking for someone to rob when they spotted Galvez sitting in his car after he finished work.

He says it appears the young men didn’t realize Galvez was an officer.

Downey is a city of about 110,000 residents 10 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles.
