Tallahassee, Fla. — An autopsy shows a Florida woman who collapsed after police arrested her for refusing to leave a Florida hospital when doctors discharged her died from a blood clot in her lung.

Blountstown Police Chief Mark Mallory said in a statement Wednesday that the medical examiner’s office in Panama City found that 57-year-old Barbara Dawson died from blood clots due to being excessively overweight.

Dawson collapsed Monday while being escorted in handcuffs from the Liberty Calhoun Hospital, where she went for treatment for breathing difficulties. She was arrested for disorderly conduct and trespassing when she refused to leave.

The Tallahassee law firm Parks and Crump is representing the family. Daryl Parks said Tuesday he plans to file a lawsuit against the hospital, police department or both.
